Joey Chestnut was born in Vallejo, California on November 25, 1983. He began his competitive eating career in 2005, while still a student at San Jose State. Joey’s first significant event was an asparagus eating contest. Joey won this competition by eating nearly six and a half pounds of deep fried asparagus in 11.5 minutes.


In 2005, he entered his first of many Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contests. He finished third after swallowing 32 hot dogs. Sonya Thomas came in second place with 37 points. Takeru Kobayashi won with 49 points.


Chestnut’s fame as an eater continued to grow after she defeated Sonya Thomas in the Waffle House World Waffle Eating Championship later that year.


Kobayashi set the world record at the 2006 Nathan’s event with 53 and 3/4ths completed. Joey finished second with 52 points, breaking the previous US record.


Joey won the 2007 contest for the first time with 66 hot dogs, defeating Kobayashi’s 63.


Between 2007 and 2015, Joey won eight consecutive Nathan’s Contests.


Matt Stonie won the 2015 contest. Joey went on to win the subsequent dives from 2016 to 2020.


Joey holds the record for most hot dogs consumed in a single competition with 74.

Joey holds the world records for eating hard-boiled eggs (141 in eight minutes), bratwurst (70 in ten minutes), Matzoh balls (78 in eight minutes), hot dogs (69 in ten minutes at the 2013 Nathan’s contest), steak (4.5 pounds plus sides in less than nine minutes), pork ribs (13.76 pounds in 12 minutes), and asparagus (12.8 pounds in 10 minutes). Joey consumed 70 hot dogs on July 4, 2016. He ate 72 a year later. A year later, he ate 74 burgers, setting a new world record. He earned his 12th title at the 2019 Nathan’s contest by devouring 71 dogs.


Annual Earnings: The top prize is $10,000 for winning Nathan’s. While this is not a large sum of money, it provides by far the most exposure for these athletes throughout the year. A top competitive eater can easily earn between $250,000 and $500,000 in prize money and sponsorships each year. Takeru Kobayashi, Joey’s longtime rival, has not competed at Nathan’s in recent years due to a contract dispute with the Major League Eating organization.
