Early Years

Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam was born on April 16, 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri. Although Akon was born in the United States, he has deep Senegalese roots. Akon spent the majority of his childhood flying between the United States and Senegal; he did not settle permanently in Newark, New Jersey, until the age of seven.

While Akon was still spending half of his time in Senegal, his parents taught him a great deal about music. His mother was a dancer and his father was the renowned percussionist Mor Thiam. Akon learned to play five instruments, including the drums and the guitar, during his youth. Akon’s permanent relocation to the United States was difficult, and he had difficulty adjusting as a young child. When Akon’s family moved to Atlanta, leaving him and his older brother to finish high school on their own, the situation did not improve.

The following chapter in Akon’s life is somewhat controversial. According to the official account, Akon served three years in prison for his involvement in an auto theft organisation. As later court documents and interviews would reveal, however, there is no record of Akon ever having been incarcerated or even convicted of a crime. Despite this, there are apparently records of detectives investigating Akon. When confronted with these inconsistencies, Akon stated that he was in and out of jail during this time, and that if these sentences were added up, they would equal approximately three years.

Music Industry

Whether or not Akon was incarcerated in 2003, he approached the music industry determined to make his mark. First, he caught the attention of Devyne Stephens, a man involved in the creation of artists such as Usher. Akon was eventually signed to Stephens’ label and recorded several tracks. These tracks were then brought to the attention of the producer “Knobody,” who encouraged Akon to produce a debut album and assisted him with the endeavour.

In 2004, Akon released his debut album, “Trouble,” It quickly reached the number eight spot on the Billboard Top 200 and launched Akon’s career. “Locked Up” and “Lonely” were two of this album’s most popular and successful tracks. Akon collaborated with a number of other artists over the next few years, most notably Jeezy on his album “Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101.”

Akon’s second album, “Konvicted,” was more successful than his first due to his established reputation within the music industry. This album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and its first week sales totaled 286,000 units. This album would include Eminem’s legendary song “Smack That” The album also featured Snoop Dogg, who contributed to the song “I Wanna Love You.” This song would be Akon’s first Billboard Hot 100 number-one single.

Akon released his third album, “Freedom.” in 2008. Once more, numerous artists contributed to the album, including Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne, who collaborated with Akon on the song “I’m So Paid” During this time, Akon also served as executive producer for a number of artists, including Flipsyde, assisting them in the release of their albums. Akon also co-wrote the 2008 hit “Just Dance” by Lady Gaga.

Akon collaborated with a variety of other artists in the subsequent years, including Damien Marley, Gucci Mane, David Guetta, and many others. Although Akon appeared on numerous artists’ albums during this time, he did not produce more of his own, leading many fans to perceive a decline in his productivity. He also announced an album titled “Stadium” that was never released. With the release of “El Negreeto.” in 2019, Akon entered the world of Latino music. During this time, he also announced the release of “Konnect,”

Since his success, Akon has been involved in numerous entrepreneurial endeavours. In 2008, Akon launched a clothing line called Konvict Clothing. Simultaneously, he launched Aliaune, a brand that offers more expensive clothing.

Akon is also well-known for his philanthropic endeavours, particularly in his native Senegal. Akon’s most ambitious plan is to construct a hyper-city a few miles from the capital of Senegal. This city of the future would operate solely on Akon’s personal bitcoin currency, Akoin, with all transactions conducted using this monetary system.
