APC Congress: Mixed reactions trail conduct of exercise in Osogbo

Despite promises made by all the parties in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun towards a successful ward congress on Saturday, DAILY POST observed that it was not so in some wards in Osogbo local government Council.

Recall that this medium had reported Saturday that party members who had turned out for the congress at Union Baptist Primary School, Odi-olowo, Osogbo could not carry on with the voting because they did not have access to the venue.

DAILY POST observed that despite the heavy presence of armed security operatives from the Department of State Security (DSS), Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Amotekun Corps, thugs still besieged the venue of the ward congress in large numbers.

Party members interviewed alleged that the thugs who were all wearing ‘ILERIOLUWA’ branded fez caps took over the collation centre for the ward congress.

According to a member, Akeem Ilyasu, the ward congress was not held in an atmosphere of peace as most members who came for the exercise relied heavily on the presence of security operatives to carry out the congress.

He stated that they had to call the security operatives in when they discovered that the thugs were growing in number.

As for the conduct of the congress, he stated that in some wards it was satisfactorily conducted while in some others, the exercise was not transparent.

Another party member, Labake Adeoye, stated that the officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were not seen but the result of the polls was given to the police who witnessed it.

Labake also explained that most members of the party who had trooped out for the congress with high expectations were not happy at the outcome as they alleged that the results were not representational and in conformity with the agreed consensus.

In other words, similar disturbances occurred but the congress still went ahead as planned and was witnessed by both INEC and security operatives.

Both the Chairman of The Osun Progressives (TOP), a caucus within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun, Adelowo Adebiyi, and spokesperson of the party in the state, Kunle Oyatomi, had assured that the ward congresses will go on as directed by the national secretariat and in line with the consensus option agreed upon by party stakeholders.
