Cordae (Cordae Amari Dunston) is a hip-hop musician from the United States. Cordae is a songwriter, singer, and rapper. Similarly, he rose to prominence via making remixes of popular songs.

Early Years

Cordae was born on August 26, 1997, in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Amari is currently 24 years old. He identifies as Christian. At the age of ten, his family relocated to Suitland, Maryland. His father would always play classic hip hop when he was growing up, including songs by Rakim, Nas, Big L, and Talib Kweli. When he was 15 years old, he started creating raps as a hobby. As he grew older, he became interested in pursuing a rap career and began researching artists on YouTube whose sound was similar to that of his father. He placed an emphasis on studies, but he was frequently sidetracked by lyric composition.

As a teenager, he released three “Entendre” mixtapes: Anxiety (2014), I’m So Anxious (2016), and I’m So Anonymous (2017). (2017). After graduating from high school in 2015, he enrolled at Towson University, but dropped college in 2018 to focus on rapping. He stated that he only attended university because of his mother. He moved from Maryland to Los Angeles.

 

Professional Life

In 2018, Cordae began his rap career seriously. He had previously released mixtapes under the name Entendre. In 2014, he released his debut mixtape, entitled “Anxiety.” At the time, he was linked with the indie record company N.A.G.E. He had previously worked on singles and videos, but ‘Anxiety’ was his first mixtape. The album contained thirteen tracks, including “Life,” “Genesis,” “Questions,” “Explanations,” “Adrenaline,” “Down and Out,” “Sucker for Love,” “Wonders,” and “Not Good Enough.”

In 2016, he released his second mixtape, titled “I’m So Anxious.” It included rappers such as WillThaRapper, Jon Bartley, and Zoe Stream, and the mixtape was larger than its predecessor. It contained 17 tracks, including ‘Pressure’, ‘Gone’, ‘Make It Easy’, ‘About Me’, ‘Dying’, ‘Never’, ‘Can’t Take It’, ‘All I Ask’, ‘3 A.M. Thoughts’, ‘Hideaway’

On August 9, 2017, he released his third mixtape ‘I’m So Anonymous’, which had 15 tracks, including as ‘Long Nights’, ‘All That Glitters’, ‘Bestfriend’, ‘Rock Bottom’, ‘Running Away’, ‘Come Thru’, ‘Price Tags’, ‘Rap Politicians’, ‘Tough Decisions’, ‘Nervous’, ‘Identity Crisis’, After graduating from college in 2018, he relocated to Los Angeles to focus intently on his rap career.

YBN

When he moved to Los Angeles, he did not release any new music, but he began to socialize with YBN Nahmir and YBN Almighty, whom he met on Xbox Live. Moreover, he considered Nahmir and Almighty to be his brothers, and he was already a member of the group in all but name; yet, because he still used Entendre for his social handles and stage name, Nahmira and Almighty were unable to officially include him. After changing his social media names from Entendre to YBN Cordae, he also became an official member of the YBN. He also adopted the stage name YBN Cordae.

In May of 2018, he released “Introduction to the World,” a remix of Eminem’s 1999 song “My Name Is,” via WorldStarHipHop as YBN Cordae. Later, he released the track ‘Old Niggas’ as a response to J. Cole’s ‘1985’. On August 2, 2018, YBN members Nahmir and he released the music video for their track “Pain Away.” The group YBN released their debut joint mixtape ‘YBN: The Mixtape’ on September 7, 2018. It contained 23 tracks, including “Intro,” “Alaska,” “Kung Fu,” and “Pain Away.”

He also released the singles ‘Fighting Temptations’ and ‘Kung Fu’ in 2018. In June, he performed over Kendrick Lamar’s ‘DUCKWORTH,’ Lil Pump’s ‘Esskeetit,’ and Method Man & Redman’s ‘Da Rockwilder’ during an interview with L.A. Leakers. The video of the act went viral, thereby expanding his fanbase. In addition to Nahmir and Almighty, he performed at the Rolling Loud music festival. It was his first time performing on stage. Nahmir was inducted into the annual freshman class during the 2018 XXL Freshman Show in New York, where the group also performed.

Grammy Nominations and World tours

He released the music video for his single “Scotty Pippen” on August 23, 2018. On January 28, 2019, he uploaded a music video for his new song “Location Relationships” to his YouTube page. In March of 2019, he released “Have Mercy,” which became the lead single for his debut studio album The Lost Boy. On June 20, 2019, he was designated one of the “2019 Freshman Class” members by XXL. Later, he issued “Bad Idea” and “RNP” as the album’s second and third singles. On July 25, 2019, “The Lost Boy” album was released.

The album earned YBN Cordae two Grammy nominations, including Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song for “Bad Idea.” In November 2019, YBN Cordae announced that he would be headlining “The Lost Boy in America Tour” beginning in January 2020.

 

YBN disband and Solo Venture

On August 6, 2020, YBN Nahmir tweeted that the YBN collective has officially separated due to a lack of contact between him and Cordae. After some time, he dropped YBN from his moniker and sought YBN Nahmir’s approval for the move. On August 27, he released “Gifted,” a new single featuring Roddy Ricch. In anticipation of his forthcoming second studio album, he released the EP Just Until featuring Q-Tip and Young Thug on April 22, 2021. The song “Super” was released on October 7, 2021.

His second studio album, From a Bird’s Eye View, was released on January 14, 2022, after being announced in December 2021. The 14-track album has contributions from Eminem, Stevie Wonder, Gunna, and others.

Professional Life

Cordae is in a relationship with Naomi Osaka, a professional tennis player. Both members of the pair are the same age. Cordae and Naomi began dating in 2019. The pair resides together. At a Clippers game, the couple initially met. During his undergraduate years, he worked at a nearby T.G.I. Friday’s. In 2016, he took part in a Black Lives Matter demonstration. In Louisville, Kentucky, he and professional football player Kenny Stills were detained during a Breonna Taylor protest. There are no other specifics or information regarding his former relationships.
