Dick Goddard was an American television meteorologist, author, animal activist, and cartoonist. Dick Goddard spent over five decades as the meteorologist for Fox Broadcasting Company-affiliated television station WJW-TV. Similarly, he was recognized by Guinness World Records for having the longest career as a weather forecaster.
Childhood

Dick Goddard was born on February 24, 1931, in Akron, Ohio. Vatchel Goddard is his father, and Doris Goddard is his mother. His father was a mechanic for a Railway Express Agency, and his mother was a stay-at-home mom. Both of his parents were fourth-graders. Between his birth and 1941, he and his parents lived in Akron. In 1941, the family relocated to a small farm in Greensburg, Ohio, which has since been renamed Green. When he was four years old, his father took him to Michigan to fish. In 1973, he ceased fishing.

 

In 1949, he graduated from Green High School, which is now located in Green, Ohio. While he was in school, he participated in football, baseball, and basketball. Additionally, he played basketball and led his senior class to Class B championships. Additionally, he made his Cleveland Browns debut in August 1948 in Akron. He studied drama and broadcasting at Kent State University.

Death

Dick Goddard was hospitalized in January 2020 with pneumonia. On May 13, 2020, her daughter Kim revealed that he was ill. Additionally, Kim disclosed that in June 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19. Regrettably, he died on August 4, 2020, at the age of 89. Additionally, his ashes were scattered beneath numerous trees, including one at the WJW studios.

Professional life

Dick Goddard enlisted in the United States Air Force following his tryout at Firestone Park for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He began his meteorology career following graduation by serving in the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1955, where he took meteorology courses. Additionally, he received fundamental training at Sampson Air Force Base. His most memorable assignment was forecasting for the United States Atomic Energy Commission’s atmospheric nuclear weapons tests.

At the Akron-Canton Airport, he joined the National Weather Service. He joined Westinghouse Broadcasting’s KYW-TV in Cleveland’s weather department in 1960. In June 1965, he and other employees agreed to relocate to WRCV-TV in Philadelphia from KYW-TV. He returned to Cleveland, however, several months later. In 1966, he was hired as chief meteorologist at WJW-TV, where he remained for the remainder of his career. Since returning to Cleveland, he has worked as the official statistician for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.

From August 1977 to January 1979, he also hosted WJW’s Bowling for Dollars game show. Additionally, he made numerous appearances on WJW’s popular Big Chuck and Lil’ John Show over the years. In December 2014, he signed a multi-year contract renewal with WJW at the age of 83. On May 18, 2016, he announced that he would step down from his weather duties in November 2016. He stepped down from the station on November 22, 2016, after delivering his final forecast.

Additionally, he was an outspoken opponent of animal abuse. The Ohio General Assembly introduced a bill, dubbed his Law, in 2013 to increase the severity of penalties for abuse. It was reintroduced in 2015. Additionally, on June 13, 2016, the 2015 version was signed into law.

Dick Goddard had received numerous awards and honors over the course of his career. He received the Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society, the Gold Circle Award, the Silver Circle Award, induction into the Cleveland Press Club Journalism Hall of Fame, induction into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame, induction into the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and induction into the Guinness Book of World Records.

 

He has amassed a sizable fortune as a TV show host and meteorologist. He was estimated to have a net worth of between $1 million and $5 million US dollars.

Relationship

For over twenty years, Dick Goddard was married to Julie Ann Cashel, who died in 1996. Following that, he married Amber Williams, his second wife, in December 1997 but divorced her in 2004. Additionally, he is the father of a daughter named Kim from his first marriage.
