The Hawks made a splash in July 1996 when they signed 7’2″ Dikembe Mutombo, who was a free agent after five seasons with the Denver Nuggets.

Initially, he aspired to be a physician. Mutombo had led the NBA in blocked shots for the previous three seasons and was the 1995 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Dikembe made an immediate impact in Atlanta’s front court, leading the league in both blocks and rebounding in his first season, as the Hawks went 56-26 and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Hawks were eliminated in the second round by the eventual champion Chicago Bulls, despite Mutombo’s postseason averages of 15 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Dikembe led the Hawks to the playoffs three times in five seasons, was a three-time All-Star, and was twice named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. He is one of only three Hawks to amass over 1,000 blocks and ranks third all-time in rebounds per game.

Mutombo is the founder and chairman of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, which he established in 1997. The Foundation, based in Atlanta, Georgia, seeks to improve the health, education, and overall quality of life for the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. One significant project was the construction of the Biamba Marie Mutombo hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s capital city of Kinshasa.

In 1994, Mutombo was scheduled to marry Michelle Roberts, a medical student. The wedding, however, was called off after Roberts refused to sign a prenuptial agreement the day before.

Mutombo’s 6’10” older brother, Ilo, began his college basketball career in 1987 as a 26-year-old freshman for the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in Division II. The brothers squared off at the Capital Centre in 1990. He eventually married Rose, another Congolese woman. They are the parents of six children, four of whom have been adopted.

Mutombo received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 2004 from the State University of New York at Cortland.
