The Hawks made a splash in July 1996 when they signed 7’2″ Dikembe Mutombo, who was a free agent after five seasons with the Denver Nuggets.

Initially, he aspired to be a physician. Mutombo had led the NBA in blocked shots for the previous three seasons and was the 1995 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
