Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton (born October 26, 1947) is an American politician and diplomat who served as the United States’ First Lady from 1993 to 2001, as a United States Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009, as the 67th United States Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013, and as the Democratic Party’s nominee for President of the United States in the 2016 election.
Clinton was born in Chicago, Illinois, and reared in the Chicago neighborhood of Park Ridge. He graduated from Wellesley College in 1969 and from Yale Law School in 1973. She relocated to Arkansas and married Bill Clinton in 1975 after working as a congressional legal counsel. She co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families in 1977.
Clinton was an outspoken supporter of gender equality and healthcare reform throughout her tenure as First Lady of the United States. During the Lewinsky controversy, her marital connection came under public scrutiny, prompting her to deliver a statement reaffirming her dedication to the marriage. Clinton was elected as New York’s first female senator in 2000. In 2006, she was re-elected to the Senate.
During her term as Secretary of State in the Obama Administration, from 2009 to 2013, Clinton advocated for military involvement in Libya in response to the Arab Spring.
Clinton ran for president a second time in 2016. In the 2016 Democratic primaries, she garnered the most votes and primary delegates, and she officially accepted her party’s candidacy for President of the United States on July 28, 2016, with vice presidential running partner Senator Tim Kaine. She became the first female presidential candidate to be nominated by a major U.S. political party.
