Malcolm X (1925-1965) was a human rights activist and American Muslim cleric. Some viewed him as a fearless fighter for black rights, a man who harshly condemned white America for its atrocities against black Americans; others accused him of preaching racism and violence. He has been dubbed one of history’s greatest and most influential African Americans.
His father was murdered when he was six years old, and his mother was sent to a mental institution when he was thirteen, following which he spent time in a number of foster homes. He was sentenced to jail for theft and breaking and entering in 1946, when he was 20 years old.
Malcolm X had become disillusioned with the Nation of Islam and its leader, Elijah Muhammad, by March 1964. He adopted Sunni Islam, expressing many regrets over his time with them, which he had come to see as completely spent. After traveling across Africa and the Middle East, including doing the Hajj, he became known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz.
On February 21, 1965, he was killed by three Nation of Islam members.
