Early Years

On November 13, 1967, James Christian (“Jimmy”) Kimmel was born in Brooklyn, New York. Kimmel grew up in the Mill Basin neighbourhood of Los Angeles until his family moved to Las Vegas when he was nine years old. He graduated from Ed W. Clark High School and went on to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for one year and two years before receiving an honorary degree from Arizona State University.

 

Career in Radio

Kimmel began working at a radio station while still in high school, inspired by David Letterman’s start. During college, he continued on and landed his first paid radio job as a morning co-host on KZOK-FM in Seattle’s The Me and Him Show. In 1990, he and his co-host, Kent Voss, were fired, primarily because of the expensive stunts they would perform on air. Kimmel decided to launch his own show in Palm Springs, California, and enlisted Carson Daly, a childhood friend, as an intern. Jimmy eventually ended up at KROQ-FM in Los Angeles, where he spent five years on the Kevin and Bean morning show as “Jimmy the Sports Guy”

Kimmel had no desire to work in television at first. He started writing promo material for Fox announcers and was eventually hired to do his own on-air promotions.
