The couple acquired Wardlow, a heritage-listed home in Melbourne’s Parkville neighborhood, in 2001.
The couple divorced in the mid-2000s owing to financial troubles, and Kitching declared bankruptcy in 2005, selling Wardlow to pay off her debts; the bankruptcy was later dissolved in 2006.
They did not divorce and subsequently reconciled.
Kitching died abruptly of a heart attack; she was well-known for her devotion to her career and to the people of Victoria.
Since October 2016, she has served as the Labor Senator for Victoria. Prior to entering politics, she worked as a lawyer and a union organizer.
