Early years

Lloyd Austin was born in Mobile, Alabama, United States on August 8, 1953. His childhood was spent in Thomasville, Georgia. Lloyd graduated from the United States Military Academy with a degree in Science. Later, he attended Auburn University and graduated with a Master of Arts in counselor education.

Webster University awarded him a master’s degree in business management in 1989. Lloyd later attended the Army War College and Army Command and General Staff College for the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses.

Soon after graduating from the West Point Military Academy, he was promoted second lieutenant. His initial assignment was with the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany. Austin has held a variety of roles while attending Army Command and General Staff College. He worked as the Chief Executive Officer, Director, and operating officer for many departments.

In 2006, he was promoted to lieutenant general and resumed his duties with the XVIII Airborne Corps. After two years, he assumed command of the Multi-National Corps in Iraq. He was the mission’s second-highest-ranking leader in Iraq.

In August 2009, Austin was elevated to Director of the Joint Staff. One year later, he assumes command of United States Forces-Iraq as the Commanding General. He was appointed Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army on January 31, 2012. During this time, he took significant measures to lower the number of suicides among Army personnel.

He assumed his new position as Commander of United States Central Command in March 2013. (CENTCOM). Austin created and executed the military campaign strategy to combat ISIL in Syria and Iraq while employed there. His retirement from CENTCOM was effective on April 5, 2016.

Joe Biden, the current U.S. president, nominated Lloyd for the position of secretary of defense. The Senate confirmed him for the job on January 22, 2021, with a vote count of 93 to 2.
