Biography of Madonna

Madonna is a seven-time Grammy Award winner who has sold over 300 million records and CDs to adoring fans worldwide. Her film career, on the other hand, is a different story. Her performances have consistently elicited scathing or ludicrous reviews from film critics, and her films have generally fared poorly at the box office, if at all. Madonna Louise Ciccone was born in August 1958 in Bay City, Michigan, to Madonna Louise Fortin and Silvio Ciccone, an engineer and designer for automobile manufacturers. Her father was of Italian ancestry (from a Pa centro family), while her mother was of French-Canadian ancestry.

She moved to New York in 1978 and studied with renowned choreographer Alvin Ailey, joined the Patrick Hernandez Revue, formed a pop/dance band called “Breakfast Club,” and began working on several disco-oriented songs with then-boyfriend Stephen Bray. Mark Kamins, a New York producer/DJ, sent her demo tapes to Sire Records in early 1982, and the rest is history. Madonna dominated the music charts in the 1980s with a string of multi-million-selling albums, and her musical and fashion influence on young women was felt throughout the world.

Dick Tracy (1990), a big-budget and star-studded film, featured her as bad girl “Breathless Mahoney” flirting with Warren Beatty, but the epic failed to take off at the box office. Madonna was much more entertaining in A League of Their Own (1992), a story about female baseball players during World War II, when she played an earthier role alongside Tom Hanks and Geena Davis. However, she incurred the wrath of critics once more with the whodunit Body of Evidence (1993), an obvious (and lame) attempt to cash in on the success of Sharon Stone’s seductive thriller Basic Instinct (1992). Following several minor screen roles, Madonna starred as Eva Peron in Evita (1996), a generally well-received screen adaptation of the enormously successful Broadway musical for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress.

In 2006, she was presented with the ‘TRL Lifetime Achievement Award’ by the ‘TRL Awards’. This artist was inducted into the ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’ two years later.

Private Life

She married actor Sean Penn on 16 August 1985, but the couple divorced four years later.

Between 1995 and 1997, she was in a relationship with Carlos Leon, her personal fitness instructor, with whom she shares a daughter, Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon.

She married director Guy Ritchie for the second time in December 2000, with whom she has two sons, Rocco John Ritchie and David Banda Mwale Ciccone Ritchie.

She and Guy Ritchie divorced in October 2008. Later in life, she adopted Mercy James from a Malawian orphanage.
