American actress Mariska Hargitay has a net worth of $100 million. She is well known for her role in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” Since 1999, she has portrayed detective Olivia Benson on the show.

Law & Order Salary

Mariska Hargitay’s currently earns $500,000 per episode.  In a regular 22-episode season, this equates to an annual salary of $11 million before syndication royalties. In addition to bonuses and other considerations, she regularly gets between $13 and $15 million each year from Law & Order.


Early Years

Mariska Magdolna Hargitay was born on January 23, 1964, in Santa Monica, California. She is the daughter of Mickey Hargitay, the Hungarian Mr. Universe, and actress Jayne Mansfield. She has two brothers and three half-brothers and sisters. Her parents separated when she was a little child. Her mother died in a vehicle accident when she was three and a half and a half years old. In the middle of the night, while driving from Biloxi, Mississippi to New Orleans, Louisiana, the automobile rear-ended a truck while travelling at high speed. Before the collision, Hargitay was dozing in the backseat of the automobile and was left with a little zigzag scar on his face. All three front-seat adults were slain. All three rear-seat children survived. Her father and his third wife, Ellen Siano, raised Mariska.


Career Beginnings

Hargitay began performing in high school, and in the early 1980s, she was crowned Miss Beverly Hills USA. In 1982, after graduating from Marymount High School, she enrolled at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, and Television. She did not complete her degree and left college early to join the Groundlings improv company in Los Angeles. She quickly began performing in minor roles on television. In the late 1980s, she began to gain guest-starring roles on television series including “Falcon Crest” “Tequila & Bonetti” “Seinfeld” and “ER”



In the spring of 1999, Hargitay auditioned for the NBC police procedural drama “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” She auditioned for the lead female part of Detective Olivia Benson. Samantha Mathis and Reiko Aylesworth were more candidates that were being considered for the part. Ultimately, after auditioning in the final round with Christopher Meloni, who was in contention for the male lead, the producers chose her and Meloni based on their demonstrated chemistry. Hargitay received training as a rape crisis advocate in preparation for the role of Benson.


Hargitay has continued to appear on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” since its premiere in 1999, making her the cast member with the longest tenure. During the latter months of her pregnancy in 2006, during the show’s sixth season, she took a temporary leave of absence from the programme. Connie Nielsen temporarily replaced her as the character Dani Beck. Hargitay has garnered a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for her participation in the show.

Hargitay has also appeared in a number of other television shows as Olivia Benson, including three episodes of “Law & Order” one episode of “Law & Order: Trial by Jury” three episodes of “Chicago P.D.” and one episode of “Chicago Fire” In addition, she has appeared as Olivia Benson on the sketch comedy programme “Saturday Night Live” Hargitay has also directed a number of “Law & Order: SVU” episodes, including “Criminal Stories” (2014), “Padre Sandunguero” (2015), “Sheltered Outcasts” (2016), and “Mea Culpa” (2018), to mention a few.


In May 2009, after the tenth season of the show, Harigtay and Meloni’s contracts expired. Currently, they were reportedly earning between $375,000 and $375,000 every episode. According to August 2012 reports, she was making between $400,000 and $500,000 every episode after successfully renegotiating her contract. Outside of “Law & Order: SVU” Hargitary has appeared in other shows as herself. This includes “Barefoot Contessa,” “The Jim Gaffigan Show,” and “Nightcap.”


Personal Life

After he appeared on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” Hargitay wed actor Peter Hermann in 2004. In 2006, the couple welcomed a son, and in 2011 they adopted two children. In 2008, after she fell during a stunt on “Law & Order: SVU” Hargitay suffered from a partially collapsed lung.


Hargitay is the creator of the Joyful Heart Foundation, which gives assistance to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. The foundation has assisted more than ten thousand mothers and children with various support structures. In September 2011, Hargitay contributed $100,000 to the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television to assist student scholarships.


Real Estate

Mariska and Peter purchased an Upper West Side townhouse near Central Park for $10.7 million in 2012. They first placed this property for sale in 2018 for $10.5 million, but ultimately settled for $9.75 million in February 2019, representing a loss of $1 million. They sold a prior New York City residence for $5,1 million in 2007 and another for $8,15 million in 2008 after only a year of ownership.


In 2010, they paid $7.34 million for a 7,000-square-foot mansion on over an acre of land in East Hampton, New York. This is their primary residence at present.
