Steven Yeun is a $5 million dollar American actor and producer who was born in South Korea. Steven Yeun rose to prominence after roles in “The Walking Dead” and “Minari.”


During his freshman year at Kalamazoo College, he discovered his passion for theatre and improv. He then joined his college’s improv group, and after graduating, he persuaded his parents to let him pursue a full-time acting career. He joined Second City Improv after moving to Chicago, Illinois, and then moved to Los Angeles. The move paid off, and after landing a guest-starring role on “The Big Bang Theory” he landed the role that would put him on the map: Glenn on “The Walking Dead”


Early Years

Yeun was born in Seoul, South Korea, on December 21, 1983 to parents Je and Jun Yeun. He grew up in a Christian home with his younger brother Brian, speaking mostly Korean. The family relocated to Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1988, and then to Michigan in the United States in 1989. After moving to the United States, his father worked as an architect in South Korea, and the family opened a beauty supply store in Detroit.


Yeun went to Ruth M. Buck Elementary School and then Troy High School, graduating in 2001. He then went to Kalamazoo College to study psychology with a neuroscience concentration, earning his bachelor’s degree in 2005. Yeun became friends with comedian Jordan Klepper’s sister while at Kalamazoo, and she took him to see Klepper’s improv show. Yeun was inspired to take his first acting class as a result of this experience. He eventually became friends with Klepper and decided to move to Chicago to pursue an improv and acting career with him. While his parents hoped Yeun would eventually enrol in law school or medical school, they gave him two years to pursue a career in entertainment and encouraged him to do so.



In 2005, Yeun relocated to Chicago and joined the Asian American sketch comedy troupe “Stir Friday Night!,” He then joined The Second City in Chicago, one of the country’s most renowned sketch comedy troupes. He decided to move to Los Angeles in October 2009 to further his acting career.


In 2010, Yeun landed his breakout role as Glenn Rhee in the AMC television horror drama series “The Walking Dead” The show was based on the same-named comic book series. It tells the story of a group of survivors fighting to stay alive during a zombie apocalypse. Viewers and critics alike praised the show, which became the highest-rated series in cable television history. Yeun’s performance in particular was praised, particularly in light of his character’s growth over the course of his six seasons on the show. After the premiere of season seven in 2016, he decided to leave.


Yeun appeared in several episodes of other television shows while on “The Walking Dead,” including “Law & Order: LA,” “Warehouse 13,” “NTSF: SD: SUV,” and “Drunk History.”


In March of 2016, Yeun was cast in Joe Lynch’s action horror film “Mayhem,” In November of 2017, the film was released. He also appeared in Bong Joon-action ho’s adventure film “Okja,” which premiered in 2017 and won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He also provided the voice of Bo in “The Star.” the same year.

Yeun starred alongside Boots Riley in the dark comedy “Sorry to Bother You,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018. The film won the Top Ten Independent Films award from the National Board of Review in 2019, as well as Best Screenplay and Best First Feature at the 2019 Independent Spirit Awards. Yeun also appeared in “Burning” a mystery drama film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. At the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, the Toronto Film Critics Association Awards, and the National Society of Film Critics Awards, he won multiple awards for Best Supporting Actor.


In 2020, Yeun starred in Lee Isaac Chung’s A24 immigrant drama “Minari.” and also served as an executive producer. The film tells the story of a Korean immigrant family who settles in the United States and becomes farmers. The film received two Sundance Film Festival awards, and Yeun was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. In 2021, Yeun was honoured when he was named to “Time” annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people, with a special mention of his role in the film “Minari.”


Yeun made her acting debut in Stephen Karam’s psychological drama film “The Humans,” in 2021. The film is based on the same-named award-winning one-act play by Karam. It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2021.


Yeun has continued to work in television series and has done some voice work outside of films. He has voiced characters in “The Legend of Korra,” “Trollhunters,” “3Below,” “Voltron: Legendary Defender,” Final Space, “Tuca & Bertie,” and “Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters,” among other shows. He also has a role in the Amazon Prime animated superhero series “Invincible,” which is based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book series.


Private Life

Yeun married photographer Joana Park in December of 2016. They have two children together and live together in Los Angeles. He has invested in his younger brother’s Korean-Mediterranean fusion restaurant, The Bun Shop, in the Koreatown neighbourhood of Los Angeles.


The Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings are two of Yeun’s favourite teams. He has also endorsed Andrew Yang for President of the United States in the 2020 election.
