Barbara Lynn Payne, Randy Savage’s wife at the time, was in the car with him on the morning of May 20, 2011.
Savage went incapacitated following a sudden heart attack while driving with his wife in Seminole, Florida, and lost control of his Jeep Wrangler, smashing into a tree.
Initial reports indicated that Savage died in the collision, although he and his wife were both wearing seatbelts and sustained just minor physical injuries.
The medical examiner’s office discovered that he had an enlarged heart and progressive coronary artery disease during an autopsy (more than 90 percent narrowed).
A prescription medication and a trace of alcohol were discovered in his system.
Savage had never received cardiac treatment and there was no evidence that he was aware of his ailment. The official cause of death was determined to be atherosclerotic heart disease.
Savage’s remains were cremated and interred beneath a favorite tree on his property in Largo, Florida, near his mother’s development.
