The USFL got off to a rocky start, with the league’s host team, the Birmingham Stallions, defeating the New Jersey Generals 28-24 on Saturday (April 16, 2022) night.
After a high-octane start by both teams that included opening-drive touchdowns, the offenses were stopped until late in the second half.
The Birmingham Stallions walked out of the halftime locker room with their guns blazing, despite the fact that quarterback Alex McGough had been injured in the first half.
J’Mar Smith entered the game and, despite some early jitters, finished 11 of 21 for 156 yards and two touchdowns (one rushing, one passing).
With 23 seconds remaining, the rushing touchdown gave the Birmingham Stallions the lead.
Following a strong first half by Luis Perez, New Jersey quarterback De’Andre Smith had the most of the reps in the second half.
Johnson led a running game that dominated for much of the second half, but the offensive fell just short, and the Generals were defeated 28-24.
